At least 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
